Basic Questions:
Q: What kind of oil do I use in the bowl of my Berkeley Jet Drive?
A: Straight 90 Weight Gear Oil
Use 90 wt.gear oil check every 2month or 100 hours of operation. To refill the bowl oil remove bothof the 1/8" npt plugs on the bowland using a squeeze bottle of oilforce oil into one of the holestill it comes out the other,re-install both of the plugs. You may notice after a while thatthe bowl bearing area is full ofwater and not oil. This is asatisfactory condition, (it isbest to keep full of oil) as waterwill leak past the seal, exceptthat this water could causestructural damage to the bowl ifpermitted to freeze. Forwinterizing always re-fill withoil before lay-up of the boat. Both oil and or water will bothlube and cool the tail shaftbushing at higher rpm levels. Thebowl seal is more designed to keepthe water out than the oil in asit is installed towards thepressure of the water. The sealwill keep the oil or water mixturein the bowl area when the boathauled out of the water as well.
Q: What arethe torque specifications for theBerkeley pumps?
A: Torque specs:
1/2" bowl bolts 70-75 ft.lbs.
5/16" nozzle housing bolts 20-25ft.lbs.
5/16" bearing cap bolts 20-25ft.lbs.
5/16" suction to intake bolts20-25 ft.lbs.
1 1/4" impeller nut 70-75 ft.lbs.
Q: How do Iadjust the packing gland?
A: Packing gland adjustment:
The packing gland can be tightenedso no water leaks past it, but ifit is set up too tight it willoverheat and the packing materialsuseful life will be shortened. Ifthe gland is permitted to leak toomuch at low speeds the pump couldsuck air back into the suctionpiece causing poor accelerationand low speed thrust. So you cansee that the gland adjustment isimportant to the operation of thejet drive. The correct adjustmentshould be about 1 drop of waterper minute at idle leaking pastthe packing gland. Both of theadjustment nuts should betightened or loosened equally asto avoid breaking the aluminumpacking follower.
Q: How do Imaintain the thrust bearing?
A: Thrust bearing maintenance:
Grease thrust bearing every 2months or 100 hours of operation. (high performance applicationsshould be greased more often)
Q: Can I runmy pump while the boat is on thetrailer?
A: Running the Berkeley out of thewater:
A Berkeley pump can be run out ofthe water as it has a greasedthrust bearing and lubricated tailshaft bushings. The impeller doesnot touch the wear ring, but dueto the fact that the bottom of thepump is open during trailering theboat, it is best to run water intothe pump through the nozzle whilerunning on the trailer. The onlyissues with running out of thewater is that after about 15 to 20minutes the bowl seal can get hotfrom lack of cooling and causeseal damage. The packing gland mayhave to be re-tightened when theboat is used the next time aswell.
